Avon Perfectly Matte Lipsticks

Avon V MAC

Are Avon's lipsticks really 'More matte than MAC' ?

Everyone and their mum are aware of how highly raved about MAC's lipsticks are all across social media and the internet. With their variety of eight different finishes including satin, glazed, creme sheen and of course matte just to name four of them and 163 shades to choose from there is definitely something for everyone. For a company such as Avon who doesn't get mentioned too often to boldly claim that their new range of lipsticks is more matte than MAC is a massive statement. I, of course, had to purchase a few and try them out for myself...

I first discovered Avon's Perfectly Matte Lipsticks advertised on the TV and with already owning A LOT of Avon makeup I had to get my hands on these. I purchased 13 of the colours ( Splendidly Fuchsia, Superb Wine, Electric Pink, Vibrant Melon, Au Naturale, Posh Petal, Perfectly Nude, Red Supreme, Adoring Love, Pure Pink and Ruby Kiss) including two of the five new shades from the 2016 summer collection ( Marvellous Mocha and Hot Plum).

The packaging of Avon's lipsticks is usually the same rectangle shaped tube with a shiny finish and see-through top to be able to see what colours you have (definite brownie points). Avon has stepped up a mark and made these tubes matte black with a rubbery feel and their logo engraved onto the piece of silver running through the tube. As for MAC they have the black bullet shaped tube with a smooth feel and their logo printed in silver. With having such uniquely designed packaging MAC stands out from any other lipstick brands and is very well recognised. Unlike the sweet vanilla cupcake scent of the MAC lipsticks, the Avon lipsticks have more of a fruity berry scent. Never the less both are a satisfying scent and add more character to these lipsticks.

As for the variety of colours Avon has done so well in my eyes. There is a selection from dark to light, with a mixture of nude, berry and red tones with pops of brighter coral colours. All of the colours look and swatch highly pigmented. When first applied to the lips they feel so smooth and creamy, nothing like any of the other Avon lipsticks I own. I personally feel like they exaggerate the cracks on my lips but I still wear them anyway, I guess it's down personal preference. I'm a sucker for any kind of nude shade and actually since purchasing Au Naturale, a brown toned nude I've worn it every day since and even bought a backup for when it runs out! The darker shades (Red Supreme, Superb Wine...) are easily the best when worn on the lips with the richest colour payoff. The lighter shades (Posh Petal, Perfectly Nude...) can settle into the cracks in your lips and cling to dry patches at times but still very pretty shades. If cracked lips are an issue for you such as myself, you could try using a lip scrub and a lip balm before applying these lipsticks. I personally find the formula of MAC's lipsticks are more suitable as I do suffer from very cracked lips and I feel even with nude shades they look a lot smoother on the lips.

Without a doubt, Avon's lipsticks are undeniably better for someone who is on a budget and is looking for a good matte lip. They come at a fraction of the price of £8.00 but are currently reduced down to £5.50 which is a complete bargain compared to paying £15.50 for a MAC lipstick. I think Avon has done so so well and their advertising has clearly worked. Everyone is talking about their Perfectly Matte Lipsticks! They're fab for what you're paying for and I think worth a try. However despite Avon's research and testing into these products, I'm not sure they're more matte than MAC, especially with MAC having the Retro Matte finish lipsticks, what do you think?
